Festival Dogs
Festivals are my happy escape space where I can eat across cultures, listen to music, and take in the moment. Initially I photographed and videotaped festivals, parades, protests, fairs, and festive events as part of my UCLA dissertation research and then I finished my PhD but couldn't find a reason to stop. The 8x12 metal photographs display some of my documentation of festive events in California though I've documented these kind of events all over the U.S.
Exploring cultural representation via costumes, performances, foodways, customs /rituals, and community offers insight to different worlds. I added the dogs as a way to work with my festival footage, but in a humorous manner. No one ever read my dissertation, but I think these anthropomorphized festival dogs might be my secret weapon to garner interest. Someday I will use the original material for something more worthy of all the people I documented/interviewed.
