RUNES
Historically, runes were both a system of writing and mysterious pictorial symbols associated with Germanic tribes 1000 plus years ago, and now mainly linked to Scandinavia. Although a study of traditional practices continue, there are many new age approaches that employ runes for self discovery and enlightenment. The blank rune continues to be controversial due to its invented tradition status during the 1980's new age movement.
I learned about runes from my subscription of Elle Magazine. An unlikely academic source, but that was pre internet and a time when most of my life I had lived in a rural agricultural town near the Mississippi River.
I needed a magazine like this to make me feel worldly or other worldly.
Similar to I Ching Divination, the runes are consulted as a way to connect with your own inner guidance or a way to bypass rational thinking. Having a little other worldly guidance at times can help.
